Warumpi Band originated in the Aboriginal settlement of Papunya in the central desert region of the Northern Territory in the early eighties. The bandās name derives from the honey-ant dreaming site located near Papunya. Original founding members were Sammy and Gordon Butcher (deceased), Neil Murray, George Rrurrambu (deceased), assisted by other young fellas in the community. They toured the Northern Territory and Kimberly region playing to communities, outback stations and isolated townships developing their unique sound and writing much of their material on the road.Ā They inspired and accompanied Midnight Oil on a month-long tour of Aboriginal communities in 1986 and recorded their sophomore album āGo Bush!ā on their return.Ā āGo Bush!ā includes the tracks from āFrom The Bushā and the original version of the indigenous anthem āMy Island Homeā, most famously covered by Christine Anu. āMy Island Homeā went on to be nominated for ARIA Awards āSong Of The Yearā, won APRA Awards 'Song of the Year' in 1995 andĀ wasĀ listed in theĀ APRA Top 30 Australian songsĀ of all time in 2001.
